A system is an ensemble of interrelated or interacting elements that collectively act according to a given set of instructions to form a more complex whole. The boundaries, shape, and purpose are defined by its outer boundaries, arrangement, and function and are more often expressed in its overall functioning. Systems study is the subject of numerous research programs in engineering, applied sciences, and mathematics. The interdependence and influence are studied at the quantum mechanical level, while systems and their working principles are compared at the atomic and molecular levels. Systems science refers to a range of theories that postulate that all phenomena of nature are governed by complex patterns of interactions among various parts rather than by the laws of physics. These interactions produce systematic regularities that produce emergent property states.
