Less than an hour after the conclusion of the previous film, former hitman John Wick is now a tagged man and on the run in Manhattan. After the selfless murder of crime lord and new member of the High Table Santino D’Antonio on the New York City Continental, John is declared “excommunicado” by his handlers at the High Table and placed under a $14 million bounty. On the run from the assassins, John reaches the New York Public Library and recovers a crucifix and a “marking” medal from a secret vault in a book. He fights his way through the many hitmen who inhabit New York City until he reaches The Director, a woman from his past who operates the theater. He received the cross as his “ticket” for safe passage to Casablanca, Morocco and had a branded Wick to signify that he had used all his help.
Meanwhile, the adjudicator with the High Table meets with Winston, the manager of the New York City Continental, and Bowery King, the leader of a tramp assassin ring. The adjudicator warned both of them for helping John Wick kill Santino D’Antonio, and both were given seven days to give up their offices or face serious consequences.
In Casablanca, John meets Sofia, a former friend and manager of Casablanca Continental. He presents his marker and asks Sofia to honor him by pointing him at The Elder, a high-ranking member of the High Table, so that he can ask for his bounty to be blotted out. Sofia takes him to an assassin named Berrada, who tells John that he might find the Elder by wandering the desert until he can no longer walk. In exchange for this information, Berrada asks for one of Sofia’s dogs; when Sofia refuses, she injures the dog. In retaliation, Sofia shot Berrada, and the two fought their way out of the [kasbah] and fled into the desert.
After meeting the marker, Sofia leaves John in the desert. He wandered around until he passed out from exhaustion but was found by The Elder’s army. John explained his actions, saying that he desperately wanted to live to “earn” the memory of the love he once had with his wife. The Elder agrees to forgive John but only if he kills Winston and continues to work for the High Table until his death. To show his commitment, John twisted his ring finger and gave his wedding ring to The Elder.
Meanwhile, the Adjudicator recruits assassin Zero and his assassin disciple to enforce the High Table’s will. With Zero’s help, the jury approached the Director and the Bowery King. As penance, both are flawed, the Bowery King is almost fatal. John arrives back in New York City and is chased by Zero’s men, but he escapes to the Continent and takes shelter. Zero nearly kills John, but is stopped when they arrive at the New York Continental, under threat of being declared excommunicated. Zero reveals himself to be a fan of John, but is sidelined. John meets Winston, who encourages John not to die as a murderer but as a man who loves and is loved by his wife.
The adjudicator arrives, but Winston refuses to give up his office, and John refuses to kill Winston. As a result, The Adjudicator “deconsecrates” the Continental NYC, revoking the protected status of neutral lands. The adjudicator then alerted Zero and his men and dispatched two buses full of body armored High Table officers as their support. With the help of the hotel’s concierge, Charon, John defends Continental from enforcers. At first, the armored officers easily killed most of the Continental guards, but later John and Charon managed to kill them with armor-piercing shellguns. John is then ambushed by Zero and his students. John defeats and kills all but two of the students, then fatally injures Zero.
The adjudicator negotiates a parley with Winston, who describes the rebellion as a “show of force” and offers penance to the High Table. John arrives, and when the Adjudicator identifies him as a threat to negotiations, Winston shoots John repeatedly, causing John to fall from the roof of the Continental. Continental NYC resumes operations and is “reconsecrated”, but Adjudication informs Winston that John’s body has disappeared and that he remains a threat to both of them. Meanwhile, an injured John Wick is sent to the mortally wounded Bowery King, who informs John that he is angry with the High Table and will fight against them. He asked John if he felt the same way, and John agreed.
